Freshman Sophia Fanucchi about rugby

This was my first year playing rugby, so joining this team was a little nerve-wracking at first. Now that I have been on the team for a while, I’ve realized how much of an impact it has had on my life and how I’m so grateful I made the decision to be a part of this team. Being a freshman was a very dramatic and scary change, but the girls on this team showed me that I didn’t have to go through it alone. I have found a sisterhood among the girls and the support we show one another on and off the field is irreplaceable. Between our volunteering events, our bonding activities, and just hanging out on the weekends, it has made me more involved within CSUMB and has also given me a sense of belonging. Being on this team has pushed me past my physical boundaries as well. Playing rugby has made me realize my own strength and resilience. Because rugby is such an aggressive and contact sport, it challenged me in ways that nothing else ever has before. Rugby has helped me prove to myself that I can do anything I put my mind to. I can tackle any girl, no matter how much bigger and stronger she may seem. Because of this team, my first year at CSUMB has been so memorable and special to me. I have found a secure home away from home within CSUMB Women’s Rugby.
